American carmaker, Chevrolet displayed its upcoming compact sedan named Essentia at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo. The Essentia is a sub-4m sedan and shares its underpinnings with the Chevrolet Beat. The Essentia will go into production in 2017 and that is when the car might be launched. The Essentia will have to face competition in the form of Honda Amaze, Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest and Ford Figo Aspire.
While the manufacturer didn’t disclose much about the vehicle’s specifications, variants, price positioning and the powertrains on offer, it can be safely assumed that the Essentia will share engine/s with the upcoming Beat. Chevrolet has however hinted that the Essentia would feature latest technology like the Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system.
The Essentia show-car on display looked quite appealing, especially the exterior design. The car, though sub-4m in length, never looked stubby and the interior space was also decent, though, it might not be the best-in-segment. The interiors of the Essentia were done in a combination of coffee brown and beige and looked very upmarket, by far the best theme on any car in the segment in which the Essentia will be pitched. However, we were heartbroken to know that the production model of the Essentia might never wear the same interior theme.
The revelation came in a short conversation with Stuart Norris – Managing Director, Design, GM, Korea. “This theme (the design) would exactly go into production, but not colours. Colours and materials are subject to change but the overall design is exactly what you’ll be seeing in the production car. It is fairly unlikely that we will be using this (interior) colour combination (in the production car)”, he said. And added, “We want to offer appropriate level of richness and I don’t think we will be offering this car just dipped in black but it will have a level of content in terms of colour breakup that will telegraph a bit more of a premium positioning of the car”.

Since the Essentia will be launched in a highly competitive segment, it is easy to assume that Chevrolet will be competitive when it comes to pricing and equipment on offer. The manufacturer has also spoken about its plans to increase localization of its products in India to about 85% in the coming 5 years with a plan to double its exports this year. We’re looking forward to Chevrolet heating up the sub-4m segment, are you?
