Renault Launches Powerful Kwid 1.0 Litre, Prices Start Rs 3.82 Lakh Onwards

Aggregating over 1.65 lakh bookings in the first year of its launch, Kwid is undoubtedly the superstar in Renault India’s portfolio as far as sales are concerned. Launched last year with a 0.8-lt engine, Kwid played stiff competition to bestseller Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 with competitive pricing, modern looks and segment best features. Now, when Kwid is almost 1 year old, it is set to compete with the likes of Maruti Suzuki Alto K10 and Hyundai Eon from one segment above, in the 1000cc engine class.

Renault has launched Kwid with a 1.0-lt DOHC engine in India that develops 68PS of maximum power and 91Nm torque. The engine output is comparable to Kwid’s competitors in the segment.

RENAULT KWID 1.0L SCe

Engine capacity

1.0 litre

Configuration

3 cylinders, DOHC 4 valves per cylinder

Power

68 PS @5500 RPM

Torque

91Nm @ 4250 RPM

Fuel tank volume

28 litres

Importantly, Kwid 1.0-lt is only Rs 22,000 dearer to the less powerful Kwid 0.8-lt and is available in top-variants only. The RXT variant of Kwid 1.0-lt is priced at Rs 3.82 lakh while the top-variant RXT(O) with airbag is priced at Rs 3.95 lakh (both prices ex-showroom). The prices of the Kwid 1.0-lt are however termed introductory and chances of a hike are surefire considering Kwid’s popularity. How early or late will Renault plan a revision in the prices remains to be seen.

Interestingly, Renault has revealed that a big chunk of Kwid’s bookings are for the top variants only; with the Kwid 1.0-lt launched marginally above the 0.8-lt version, chances are bright that a lot of buyers would want to upgrade to the more powerful version of the small car.

At the launch, Sumit Sawhney, Country CEO and Managing Director, Renault India Operations, said, “Renault KWID has revolutionised the compact hatchback segment in India, delivering our promise of creating a new era in automotive history. It has generated unprecedented success in its category and has won the hearts of customers’ and automotive experts alike. At Renault, we are committed to continuous innovation and we are happy to launch the Renault KWID 1.0L SCe today. With this launch, we look forward to welcoming more customers into the Renault family as we endeavor to aggressively build our presence in India.”

Besides the engine, there are only a couple of changes made to the Kwid’s exteriors. The Kwid now gets silver painted ORVMs in a housing and a chequered door protector that was previously done in black. Things remain unchanged on the inside though.
