Car Sizzler Autoexpo AutoExpo in CarSizzler Volkswagen Unveils 1.8-lt Polo GTI At Auto Expo Carmakers in India are finally focusing on adding some serious muscle to their everyday small cars. Thanks to better roads and highways, falling fuel prices, growing enthusiasts and aspirant buyers, the Indian market finally seems to be ready to assess the right worth of a bigger engine. While Fiat has already made a bold move by offering Abarth Punto in India in 2015, Volkswagen has finally hinted at offering the powerful 1.8-lt version of the Polo, the GTI.   Volkswagen had already launched the Polo GT TSI in India with a 1.2-lt engine that churned a maximum of 105PS of power but the GTI will be in another league altogether. The specifications of the Polo GTI are as follows:   Engine type Turbocharged Engine displacement 1.8-lt Transmission 7-Speed DSG Maximum Power 192 PS   Volkswagen is yet to announce the prices of the Polo GTI for the Indian market however we can expect it to touch the price range of entry level D-segment cars. What you can expect at that price will be a machine for the purists, lots of high speed overtakes and some exhilarating sessions at the BIC. The Indian market is not prepared for such a vehicle at a high asking price. The Prius currently retails at an ex-showroom, Delhi price of about Rs 38 lakh for the Z5 grade and Rs 39.80 lakh for the Z6 version.   Toyota has an aim with the Prius, and that is to create Hybrid awareness across stakeholders including customers, the govt., regulation authorities on the benefit of Hybrid Technology. VW Eyes Hybrid Premium Sedan Segment With Passat GTE Plug-in Hybrid German carmaker, Volkswagen showcased its premium sedan, the Passat in India at the 2016 Auto Expo. The Passat’s GTE version, which is a hybrid variant of the new Passat was showcased and will soon be a part of VW’s Indian line-up. The company has disclosed that the Passat GTE will be one of the new car launches that the company has planned for the Indian market this year.   About VW Passat GTE   The Passat GTE is a plug-in hybrid that is powered by an electric motor paired to a 1.4-lt TSI petrol engine. Power is transferred to the wheels via a 6-speed DSG gearbox and the maximum power output of the combination is 218PS. The Passat is capable to do a 0-100 kmph in under 8 seconds and has a top speed of 225 kmph. Thanks to a plug-in hybrid setup, the Passat has a massive range of 1000km on a tank-full!   Toyota already has the Camry Hybrid in India which is performing decently considering the lack of awareness of hybrid vehicles and high sticker value. The Camry however is not a plug-in hybrid and the electric motor is charged on-the-fly. While that makes Camry a more practical vehicle for the Indian market considering lack of infrastructure to charge vehicles in our country, the Passat should be more economical to run. Reaching a conclusion as to which of the two will be better is still far as pricing is a key factor and VW hasn’t announced the prices of Passat GTE for the Indian market. We will however soon pitch the Passat GTE against the Camry Hybrid to know which of the two wins in the specifications, equipment and road presence bouts. Mercedes-Benz unveils GLC SUV at the 2016 Auto Expo Mercedes-Benz has revealed that it is looking forward to launch more than a handful of vehicles this year. The company has showcased the GLC SUV at the Indian Auto Expo and the mid-size SUV should be launched very soon here. The GLC Class SUV will be bigger than Mercedes-Benz’s GLA Class SUV.   While Mercedes-Benz has not disclosed much about the SUV, the company has mentioned that the GLC 300 4MATIC gets a standard 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission and revealed that the DYNAMIC SELECT handling control system with five driving programs is also standard. In addition to the ECO, COMFORT, SPORT, SPORT+ and INDIVIDUAL settings which are familiar from other models, the GLC will also be equipped with the Off-Road Engineering package.   Mercedes-Benz’ US Official site gives the following specs for the GLC 300 4MATIC: Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet Unveiled, Looks Classy German luxury carmaker unveiled its smart looking S-Class Cabriolet in India at the 2016 Auto Expo. Talking about the 4-seater open top vehicle, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India, Roland Folger said, “ .. the S-Class Cabriolet’s addition will bring in a new dimension to the top-end luxury cabriolets in India.”   The S-Class Cabriolet is the 6th variant of the current S-Class family and the first open-top luxury four-seater from Mercedes-Benz since 1971. The S-Class Cabriolet is powered by a 4663-cc, V8 engine that makes 455 hp and a peak torque of 700 Nm from as low as 1800 rpm.   There’s a switch in the centre console of the S-Class Cabriolet that can be used to open and close the soft top while on the move up to a speed of 60 km/h in 20 seconds. Chevrolet Showcases Compact Sedan Essentia, Production Model To Get Different Interior Colours American carmaker, Chevrolet displayed its upcoming compact sedan named Essentia at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo. The Essentia is a sub-4m sedan and shares its underpinnings with the Chevrolet Beat. The Essentia will go into production in 2017 and that is when the car might be launched. The Essentia will have to face competition in the form of Honda Amaze, Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest and Ford Figo Aspire.   While the manufacturer didn’t disclose much about the vehicle’s specifications, variants, price positioning and the powertrains on offer, it can be safely assumed that the Essentia will share engine/s with the upcoming Beat. Chevrolet has however hinted that the Essentia would feature latest technology like the Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system.   The Essentia show-car on display looked quite appealing, especially the exterior design. The car, though sub-4m in length, never looked stubby and the interior space was also decent, though, it might not be the best-in-segment. The interiors of the Essentia were done in a combination of coffee brown and beige and looked very upmarket, by far the best theme on any car in the segment in which the Essentia will be pitched. However, we were heartbroken to know that the production model of the Essentia might never wear the same interior theme.   The revelation came in a short conversation with Stuart Norris – Managing Director, Design, GM, Korea. “This theme (the design) would exactly go into production, but not colours. Colours and materials are subject to change but the overall design is exactly what you’ll be seeing in the production car. It is fairly unlikely that we will be using this (interior) colour combination (in the production car)”, he said. And added, “We want to offer appropriate level of richness and I don’t think we will be offering this car just dipped in black but it will have a level of content in terms of colour breakup that will telegraph a bit more of a premium positioning of the car”.   Stuart Norris – Managing Director, Design, GM, Korea, inside the ESSENTIA   Since the Essentia will be launched in a highly competitive segment, it is easy to assume that Chevrolet will be competitive when it comes to pricing and equipment on offer. The manufacturer has also spoken about its plans to increase localization of its products in India to about 85% in the coming 5 years with a plan to double its exports this year. We’re looking forward to Chevrolet heating up the sub-4m segment, are you? Vitara Brezza without these additions was also displayed at the Auto Expo.
