Audi has some very nice and good looking surprises planned for its customers and others to just ogle at this year. Volkswagen owned Audi recently unveiled its A3 Saloon in New York, USA. This saloon A3 is the third member of the A3 generation. In other words, yes, it used to be a sportback hatch but now an even better looking saloon. Audi actually knows better how to simply add a boot at the car’s rear without making it look strange like in some cases with the cars in the India stable being converted from a good looking hatchback to a disastrous sedan (Swift to DZire). The Audi A3 is expected to reach India before the end of this year. Audi A3 Saloon will be a direct competition to the Mercedes Benz CLA and BMW 2 Series.
But the million dollar question is that how is Audi planning to put a price tag on the A3 Saloon as currently their A3 Sportback costs around Rs.15 Lakhs abroad (in the price range of Volkswagen Jetta). Okay, so you might say that it can be priced around Rs. 20 Lakhs onwards, but there is one more problem. Volkswagen Passat diesel 2.0L starts from Rs. 22 Lakhs and goes on to Rs. 28 Lakhs, which is Volkswagen luxury saloon. Also keep in mind that the Audi A4 price range starts from Rs. 28 Lakhs (A4 being the cheapest Audi available in India currently) also the highest selling variant from the Audi stable.
Audi A3 Saloon Will Offer Three Engine Types-
1.4 Litre TFSI Petrol, 138 BHP.
1.8 Litre TFSI Petrol, 178 BHP.
2.0 Litre TDI Diesel, 148 BHP.
So basically, at the price of Volkswagen Passat’s 2.0 Litre Diesel highline variant you will then have an option instead to go for Audi’s cheapest car and also the base model, the A3 1.4 Litre Petrol, if Audi plans to price it higher than the Volkswagen Passat. Currently if you’re in the market for a VW Passat highline, you have a choice instead to go for the premium label Audi A4. Now with the coming of Audi A3 Saloon, things are about to change.
Another important thing to keep in mind before jumping the gun and making up your mind for the Audi A3, I’ll suggest you to go through the Mercedes Benz CLA catalogue as well. Mercedes Benz is desperate to catch the young generation sporty saloon kind of mindset and with the CLA it might as well be successful in doing just that. The CLA looks very promising and probably the best looking mean machine in the segment (also the most powerful if you go for the AMG version). Audi is in for a tough competition either way. On the right is Mercedes Benz with their bad boy beast the CLA and on the left is BMW with their 2 Series, although not as mean looking as the Mercedes Benz CLA, but it’s definitely in the club.
Come back for more on the launch dates and reviews of these cars along with some very beautiful photographs.
