Mercedes-Benz Launches GLE400 Petrol In India

Taking into account a small but significant shift towards petrol powered vehicles in India, Mercedes-Benz is gunning to equip its entire portfolio with petrol versions in order to not lose potential petrol preferring buyers. The company has therefore launched the GLE SUV (est. M-Class) in its petrol avatar for the first time in the Indian market. The GLE 400 4MATIC is powered by a 3.0-lt, V6 engine and is priced at Rs 74.90 lakh, ex-showroom, New Delhi.

Mercedes-Benz’ move to launch the GLE petrol comes after the lifting of diesel ban in Delhi-NCR that affected it negatively. While GLE petrol’s launch is not a move in response to the ban (since it has already been lifted), it is to ensure that buyers who may sway from buying diesel vehicles are not left wanting (within Mercedes-Benz portfolio).

The GLE 400 4MATIC will currently be sold in India as a CBU and will later be manufactured here. Priced at Rs 74.90 lakh, it’s around a lakh costlier than the GLE 350d 4MATIC powered by a similar-sized diesel engine. Considering Mercedes-Benz might revise prices once manufacturing starts here, the petrol GLE might get more affordable than its 3.0-lt diesel counterpart. GLE 250d, the less-powerful diesel GLE is however cheaper to buy by a margin in excess of Rs 10 lakh from both the other variants.

A quick compare between petrol and diesel GLE shows that the petrol version is more powerful than the diesel GLE. Understandable, the diesel GLE produces more torque and should also be more fuel efficient compared to its petrol counterpart.
